National Chiropractic Health Month: Kurt Sliefert

For most of his life, 44-year-old Kurt Sliefert had not considered chiropractic care. As the Food Service Director at Logan University, he was aware of the Logan University Health Centers but had no personal experience with its services—until one day he decided to visit.

From his very first visit, Kurt was impressed by the professionalism at the Health Centers. He initially started going to establish a baseline, ensuring quicker access to care if any health issues arose. He then began weekly visits for maintenance and continued to see clinicians for over a year.

“The student clinicians were nothing but professional,” he said. “They took the time to assess me and developed a personalized treatment plan. It was a pleasant experience, and I felt confident I was in good hands – especially with the supervising clinician’s input in the treatment plan.”

However, about a month ago, Kurt began experiencing discomfort in his neck and shoulder, and numbness in two of his fingers. After consulting with his primary care doctor, he was diagnosed with a pinched nerve.

“My doctor told me it wouldn’t be a quick fix and would take months of physical therapy,” Kurt explained. “When I mentioned I had been visiting Logan’s Health Centers for routine maintenance chiropractic visits, she suggested I continue with chiropractic care for this new issue as well.”

Kurt increased his visits to the Health Centers to twice a week and his clinician developed a new treatment plan. Within just two weeks, he noticed significant improvement. The feeling in his fingers started to return and the pain in his neck and shoulder began to fade. What was initially expected to be a long road to recovery was shortened through chiropractic care.

“I feel better each week, which I never thought would be possible a month ago,” Kurt said.

Kurt continues his twice-weekly visits as part of an ongoing treatment plan and hopes to reduce them to once a week soon. He credits the clinic staff for their support throughout his recovery and encourages others in the community to take advantage of the Health Centers.

“Everything about my experience has been positive,” Kurt said. “I would absolutely recommend the Health Centers, and chiropractic care in general, to anyone dealing with pain or discomfort.”

This October, during National Chiropractic Health Month (NCHM), chiropractors nationwide are sharing information on the importance of maintaining a strong and healthy musculoskeletal (MSK) system as we age. As experts in MSK health, chiropractors provide a non-drug, evidence-based and patient-centered approach to treating common MSK conditions such as neck pain, joint pain and back pain (the single leading cause of disability worldwide).

Check back throughout NCHM and hear from real Logan University Health Center patients on how they plan for a #StrongHealthspan!
